THE CASTING PROCESS

Take a sneaky peak and how we go about making our 3D casts so that you know what to expect when we make a casting of your baby.

TAKING THE MOULD

When we come and visit you we take a mould of your baby's hand, foot, or bottom using body safe alginate.

Alginate is made from seaweed, totally safe and non-toxic.  We use either a normal set or  slow set alginate depending on what we are casting.  Most moulds are made within about two minutes.

POURING THE PLASTER

We take the moulds home to our studio and fill them with stone plaster.  This plaster is especially strong and weather proof and less likely to be prone to knocks and chips.

We leave the plaster to cure overnight before opening the moulds to reveal the beautiful casts inside.

FINISHING OF THE CASTS

Once the moulds have been opened we leave the casts to dry for a few weeks before we start to clean them up and sand them so they sit nicely.

From this plaster piece we can go on to make a second reusable mould and create a piece in resin bronze, solid bronze, 35% lead crystal and nickel plate.

Otherwise we can paint, wax and frame or mount the stone plaster piece.
